Once were warriors
Notes for an Address to the Powers That Be I would like to submit a project to you, a grandiose project that will make us a strong and powerful people, ready to conquer the world. Today we are dangerously on the threshold of a new Middle Ages, and no one seems to worry about it. While we bask in our bubble of peace and serenity, we pay no heed to the wars that surround us. Ferocious and ruthless wars, like all wars. Wars fought by warrior civilizations, by peoples who have not known the comforts of civilized life. The danger is at the gates, we absolutely must do something, something never done in the course of History; only thus will we interrupt the cycles and recurrences. History repeats itself, we know it, we have all studied it, but as has always happened in the past, most people are incapable of seeing the recurrences in their own time. Every time a warlike and savage civilization meets an evolved and refined civilization, the encounter is always a clash, and at the end of the clash it is always the people we would call more civilized who succumb. It happened to the Athenians in the war with Sparta, and afterwards it happened to the whole of Greece when it was overcome by Rome. The Romans, a warrior civilization, the Warrior Civilization par excellence. A rough people, accustomed to fighting for dominance, who in a few centuries built the greatest empire in History. Unfortunately, as had already happened in Greece, power and wealth corrupt the spirit; art and culture bring with them comforts and distractions. The clash between Rome and the Warrior Civilizations of Northern Europe was inevitably fatal. To avoid a new Middle Ages we must act as soon as possible and eliminate all the factors that weaken our peoples and make them unwarlike. We must use all the Science and Technology of our time to make our peoples barbarous once more; only thus can we be sure of guaranteeing the survival of our peoples. To show you my project, a test environment is needed, where we can conduct the first experiments, develop the first technologies of environmental destructuring, and observe the effect that the new, no longer comfortable, environment will have on people. I have chosen a city for our test. A city that, in the light of what I have said before, takes on a symbolic and iconic value. I am speaking of the city of Rome. It is time to put an end to harmful frivolities such as smooth-flowing traffic, urban transport, flowering flowerbeds, little parks with benches and other amenities that hinder the development of a healthy warrior spirit. It is the moment to begin transforming Rome into a jungle. I am not speaking figuratively. The technologies I will show you shortly will make weeds grow in the smallest cracks of the streets and pavements, will turn the draining asphalt into muddy potholes, will corrode it until it creates chasms, will turn escalators into waterfalls and will attract every kind of beast and parasite into the central and residential districts. For now these are prototypes, but if, as I believe, You, most illustrious Powers That Be, have fully understood the ineluctable urgency of the moment, then with an adequate allocation of funds, all this can become reality. Grant me the necessary funds and I will transform Rome into the most hostile of jungles. If the experiment, as I believe, works, we could proceed with the transformation of all of Europe and turn our peoples into the first great Barbarian-Technological Civilization, capable of once again subjugating the entire planet.
The book was conceived, devised and produced during the Human photography workshop of Yogurt, between 2019 and 2021.
